The effect of gain and absorption on surface plasmons in metal nanoparticles
نویسندگان
چکیده
The compensation of loss in metal by gain in interfacing dielectric has been demonstrated in a mixture of aggregated silver nanoparticles and rhodamine 6G dye. An increase of the quality factor of surface plasmon (SP) resonance was evidenced by the sixfold enhancement of Rayleigh scattering. The compensation of plasmonic losses with gain enables a host of new applications for metallic nanostructures, including lowor no-loss negative-index metamaterials. We have also predicted and experimentally observed a suppression of SP resonance in metallic nanoparticles embedded in dielectric host with absorption. PACS 61.46.Df; 73.20.Mf; 78.67.Bf

Low absorption losses of strongly coupled surface plasmons in nanoparticle assemblies.
Coupled surface plasmons in one-dimensional assemblies of metal nanoparticles have attracted significant attention because strong interparticle interactions lead to large electromagnetic field enhancements that can be exploited for localizing and amplifying electromagnetic radiation in nanoscale structures. Ohmic loss (i.e., absorption by the metal), however, limits the performance of any appli...
متن کاملSize-Dependent Surface Plasmon Dynamics in Metal Nanoparticles
We study the effect of Coulomb correlations on the ultrafast optical dynamics of small metal particles. We demonstrate that a surface-induced dynamical screening of the electron-electron interactions leads to quasiparticle scattering with collective surface excitations. In noble-metal nanoparticles, it results in an interband resonant scattering of d-holes with surface plasmons. We show that th...
متن کاملAdjustable Plasmonic Bandgap in One-Dimensional Nanograting Based on Localized and Propagating Surface Plasmons
Compared to the long history of plasmonic gratings, there are only a few studies regarding the bandgap in the propagation of plasmonic surface waves. Considering the previous studies on interpretation of plasmonic bandgap formation, we discuss this phenomenon using the effect of both surface plasmon polariton (SPP) and localized surface plasmon (LSP) for our fabricated one-dimensional metallic-...
متن کاملCoupling discrete metal nanoparticles to photonic crystal surface resonant modes and application to Raman spectroscopy.
Coupling a tightly packed layer of discrete metal nanoparticles to the resonant mode of a photonic crystal surface has been demonstrated as a means for obtaining additional electromagnetic gain for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), in which electric fields of the photonic crystal can couple to plasmon resonances of the metal nanoparticles. Because metal nanoparticles introduce absorpt...
متن کاملThe effect of temperature on optical absorption cross section of bimetallic core-shell nano particles
In this paper, the temperature dependence on optical absorption cross section of the core shell bimetallic nanoparticles (NPs) is investigated in quasi static approximation. Temperature dependence of the plasmon resonance is important issue because of recent applications of NPs of noble metal for heat treating of cancer and the computer chips. The effect of temperature on surface plasmon resona...
